Design your dream kitchen in five easy steps

Deciding on the right kitchen to suit the needs of you and your family can be tricky. You’ve got to consider your budget, practicalities, colour schemes and your family needs – and that’s just the start! With so many things to consider, we’re exploring how to identify what your specific needs and wants are to create that dream designer kitchen.

Step 1: Work out your budget

The first step in designing your dream kitchen is to work out what you can afford. There’s no point falling in love with certain materials and appliances if they fall completely out of your price range. Step 2: Understand the use of your kitchen and what you need most

One of the most important aspects to think about it is how you and your family intend to use your kitchen and the space you have to play with.

Ask yourself:

• How much dining space you need and what style you like – is it a traditional table, small breakfast bar, or modern bench or booth design?
• Are you a keen cook? If so, preparation space will be a priority, along with storage space for food and utensils.
• Are you tech savvy? If gadgets are your thing, you’ll need to keep this in mind when deciding how and where to spend your budget.
• Is a family-friendly, warm design more important, or do you want something minimalist, just for grown-ups?
• Do you want your kitchen to be more than just a place to cook? A sociable kitchen is becoming more and more popular with spaces for entertaining and play areas for the kids.
• How much of your personality do you want to show in the design?

Step 3: Research the relevant designs

Now you’ve got a good idea of what you want and need from a kitchen, start taking a look at designs you like. It’s always useful to have something to show us before coming to your initial consultation. Research can be done by using all sorts of materials – from browsing lifestyle magazines or Houzz to making mood boards on Pinterest. Step 4: Ask for advice

Designing a kitchen is hard – so we don’t expect you to do all the hard work alone. Book in for a design consultation at Kitchen Design Centre to chat through your ideas. We’ll be able to advise on what we think is best for your home and take you through a variety of options.
