Have those top American sitcoms got you dreaming of that perfectly sized, sociable American kitchen? A multifunctional, sociable space full of gadgets and designed for family is the heart of American style kitchen design. You’ll have already seen the influences start to trickle into British homes and today we’re going to tell you just how to get the look yourself!
One thing the American home is well known for is its open plan design. For centuries, the British kitchen was a workspace with just one function – food preparation. Now, many British homes are welcoming the American open plan design when it comes to their kitchen, making the kitchen the heart of the home. It’s the place you can cook, clean, entertain and socialise and has become refined to fit our modern day lifestyles.
A multi purpose, American style kitchen works best with space – and like anything stateside, the bigger the better! If your kitchen space is limited, it may be worth considering renovating your home and perhaps making two of three rooms into one.
We’re talking fridge freezers here. You know those double width, double door, tall fridge freezers with integrated features? You can get them here in the UK too and they do make a real statement in your overall kitchen design. They’re great for families who need lots of food space and can be twice the size of standard models!
One thing you’ll notice about American style kitchens is the vast number of gadgets on display – a garbage disposal, an ice maker, a drip coffee machine … we could go on! At the Kitchen Design Centre we too have an inspirational variety of NEFF gadgets, fit for any American style kitchen. Pancakes, waffles, syrup and Americana coffee anyone?
Americans love a good kitchen island. They give workers added counter space, added storage and sometimes even an extra cook top. Why have less when you could have more?! Other benefits of a kitchen island include the extra seating they provide and of course the stunning style they add to the room – some islands can be a real show stopper! At the Kitchen Design Centre, islands have become a very popular feature in our kitchens. You’ll be able to see just a few of the stand out island designs in the customer kitchens section of the website.
Obviously gaining inspiration from the American flag here. Think white with splashes of red and blue to convey the quintessential of an American kitchen without being too overpowering. The addition of stars and stripes is a quirky touch you might just like to add yourself, through the use of accessories like tea towels and crockery.
One option when it comes to designing your American style kitchen is the American diner look. It shares a lot of similarities with the kitchen elements described above but plays on retro colours and iconic appliances to create that quirky feel. You can get more retro kitchen ideas in one of our earlier blog posts.
