Thousands of people across their country will stand in their kitchen this month as they will resolve to upgrade their kitchen as part of a spring makeover.
Home improvements are a very popular at this time of year, and with the kitchen one of the most frequently used rooms in any home. It’s important for it to be both stylish and functional. This guide examines the trends which are taking over the kitchen world right now, and are set to be huge in 2013.
The ‘Revamp’
Ripping out an entire kitchen and starting from scratch might not be at the very top of everyone’s to-do list for the New Year, especially when one of the biggest trends right now is that of the ‘revamping kit’; a small set which remodels countertops and cabinets to give the room a whole new look.
The kits offer a very basic way to change the look and feel of a kitchen by updating the countertops. However, some have hit back at this method of renovation, with many preferring to opt for huge slabs of natural stone tiles to make up their worktops.
The revamping kits are cost-effective but often don’t last half as long as stunning stretches of solid natural stone, and durability is one of the functions that everything in a kitchen should have.
Go Retro
50s and 60s style kitchens, with vintage furniture, repurposed decorative items and accents in the steampunk style are one of the most exciting trends on the horizon.
Some of the most unique retro ideas include blackboard paint on walls (useful for shopping lists!), fridges that are reminiscent of English telephone boxes or famous posters, and bar stools or dining chairs covered in cute 50s or 60s patterns.
The nostalgic flavour can be brought right up to the 21st century with the help of strong black technical stone tiles across one wall as a feature, or as a worktop.
Mix It Up!
One criticism of many kitchens is that, with so many companies offering complete kitchens in a box, they can often be fairly generic.
Those with a flair for interior design are currently trying to combat this, creating an avant-garde style of kitchen decoration which combines various materials and styles.
With an eclectic mix of the modern and the traditional, the minimalist and the shabby-chic, the classic and the alternative, this modern interior design trend, when done properly, is mightily impressive.
Using a base such as beige or white walls, white floors fitted with porcelain tiles and pale countertops allows for much more freedom in the accents in this trend, and ensures that it is not too busy or clashing.
