A contemporary kitchen for a period property

When Sue bought a Victorian property in Rochdale she embarked on an ambitious renovation, knocking walls down to create an open-plan area to house a new, contemporary kitchen.

Keen to embrace the features of the traditional property, her aim throughout was to contrast old and new with a modern kitchen.

Needing a kitchen company that could advise on the use of the space and be design-led, she turned to Paul Harrington at Kitchen Design Centre. She approached several companies but felt none of them understood what she was after. This contrasted heavily with Paul who she felt interpreted the brief perfectly and gave invaluable advice to change the long, thin kitchen in to a large, contemporary open-plan one.

Are you ready to make your dream kitchen a reality?

As a keen Pinterest user, Sue had created several design boards and had an idea of the look she wanted. When she visited the Failsworth showroom she fell in love with a display that featured pale wood cabinets and planned to incorporate these with altering textures throughout the space. The result is contrasting Laser Soft GL Graphite and Laser brilliant GL units with Oak Sand on the island and open wall units.

When it came to appliances, Sue wanted to be able to cook with gas and was delighted that Neff did a gas hob, choosing the Domino Hob in Black Glass. She complemented this with a Flexinduction Hob and a suite of Neff ovens: the Hide and Slide Oven, Compact Oven and Microwave and the high Warming Drawer.

A Neff Fridge and No Frost Freezer completed the Neff appliances and Sue also chose a Quooker Pro3 Flex Chrome tap and a Caple Wine Cabinet.

She’s delighted with the finished kitchen and feels it really makes the downstairs of the house, “the kitchen in amazing, I can’t believe how fabulous it looks. I’ve had so many compliments and love how it works for us on a day-to-day basis but also how fantastic it is to entertain in. Kitchen Design Centre were fantastic from Paul to the fitters. Being able to visit a large showroom was vital for me too.”

What Our Designer Says

"This was a great project to work on because remodelling the downstairs and creating an open-plan area effectively gave me a blank canvas to work with. Sue had some great design ideas and the finished kitchen is the perfect example of contrasting colours and textures."

AS SEEN ON GEORGE CLARKE’S BEAUTIFUL BUILDS: FROM DATED LAYOUT TO DREAM ENTERTAINING SPACE

When Katherine and Andrew purchased their property, they always knew a full renovation would follow.

With both the outdated kitchen and untouched garden requiring significant transformation, the project soon became part of Channel 4’s George Clarke’s Beautiful Builds – it was an opportunity they felt perfectly aligned with their vision for the property.

While searching for a local kitchen specialist, Kitchen Design Centre immediately stood out thanks to its long-standing reputation, glowing customer reviews and welcoming showroom experience.

The brief focused on creating a sleek, contemporary kitchen that would feel open, social and highly functional, while complementing the wider architectural renovation of the home.

The finished design delivers a beautifully balanced space that combines clean lines with luxurious detailing.
One of the standout features is the striking worktop design. The waterfall edge peninsula creates a bold focal point within the room, while the continuation of the material across the side panels introduces a seamless, premium aesthetic.

Functionality was equally important throughout the design process, with carefully considered storage solutions and high-quality appliances helping to simplify everyday living. Among Katherine and Andrew’s favourite additions is the Neff oven, praised for both its versatility and pyrolytic self-cleaning function.
The completed result is a sophisticated contemporary space that completely transforms how the home looks, feels, and functions, perfectly reflecting Katherine and Andrew’s original vision from the moment they moved in.
