The art of hidden kitchen storage: the hidden pantry

If you enjoy spending your time in the kitchen thinking up new recipes, or simply cooking for friends and family, chances are you need a significant amount of space to neatly store all of your ingredients, and the cupboards only offer so much. That’s where a pantry comes in. The inclusion of pantries in kitchens has grown in popularity in recent years, and it’s not hard to understand why – they’re convenient!

However, with clean, minimalist and contemporary kitchens, less is more, and the fewer things you have on the show taking up space on your countertops and shelves, the better. Naturally, classic design trends have adapted, and now the demand has risen for hidden kitchen storage. And you guessed it, the pantry is up there with one of the most requested features, and it’s certainly one we get asked to include in our client’s designs often here in the Kitchen Design Centre. Here’s what you need to know about these stunning, subtle kitchen designs and why they may be the perfect addition to your dream kitchen.

What is a hidden pantry?

A standard pantry is the dedicated storage area in the kitchen where non-perishable food items, cooking supplies, and sometimes even small appliances are stored. It’s the perfect addition to a busy kitchen or household with quite a few mouths to feed.

A hidden pantry takes this concept and elevates it. Unlike a traditional pantry that’s in plain view, a hidden pantry is a more modernised version designed to blend seamlessly with the rest of your kitchen. Concealed either behind cabinetry or a discreet door, it offers all the functionality of a regular pantry while maintaining a clean and uncluttered aesthetic, maximising your storage space and keeping your kitchen looking sleek and organised, perfect if you have a penchant for minimalism.

Interior design styles and hidden pantries

Hidden pantries are staples of Scandinavian and Japanese-style kitchens due to their alignment with these aesthetics’ core principles. Scandinavian design emphasises clean lines and functional solutions, so does Japanese minimalism. Japandi, a fusion of these two styles, blends that simplicity with sophistication and of course, style.

All three of these interior design styles prioritise a streamlined, uncluttered look, which makes hidden pantries a perfect fit. And as these styles continue to gain popularity in contemporary homes, hidden pantries are increasingly common, becoming a prominent trend for 2024 and is showing no signs of slowing down as we move closer to 2025.

Why should you consider a hidden pantry?

Hidden pantries are a stylish and practical addition to any dream kitchen, offering a variety of benefits beyond how they look in situ. These clever storage solutions help optimise available space, which is ideal if conserving space is a necessity for your kitchen design, keeping your kitchen organised, and maintaining a sleek, clutter-free appearance.

Here’s a closer look at the key benefits:

  • Maximises available space: Utilises underutilised areas, like alcoves or corners, for efficient space use and reduced clutter.
  • Enhances your kitchen’s organisation: Provides a dedicated area for non-perishable items like rice, pasta, grains, cereal, etc., keeping food and supplies neatly arranged and easily accessible.
  • Improves aesthetics: Contributes to a clean, streamlined kitchen design.
  • Reduces countertop clutter: Keeps countertops and surfaces free from visible pantry items, creating a more open and tidy environment.
  • Discreet: Keeps items out of view and minimises the risk of children or pets getting their hands (or paws) on something they shouldn’t.

AWARD-WINNING KITCHENS FOR AN AWARD-WINNING DEVELOPER

As you may know if you’ve visited any of our showrooms in Manchester, Blackburn, Liverpool or Barrowford, we manage more than 250 kitchen projects each year here at Kitchen Design Centre. Many of these kitchens are for individual customers, but we also specialise in providing exceptional designer kitchens to housebuilders and developers. We have a particularly successful longstanding relationship with Candelisa, a prestigious Yorkshire-based property developer that is (like us) known for the peerless quality of its designs.
The company already has an impressive array of awards on its shelves, and its team have recently managed to secure their latest accolade: the Best High Volume New Housing Development at the prestigious LABC Awards!
In case you need a quick refresher, the LABC Awards are the largest business-to-business awards in the UK’s building control sector, aimed at celebrating and rewarding building projects, and the people behind them. The Best High Volume New Housing Development in question was Candelisa’s project at Countyfields, Embsay. Due to our strong relationship with the company (largely through Simon Thomas, the head of our Barrowford showroom), Kitchen Design Centre was chosen to deliver every kitchen at the Embsay development – and like Candelisa’s team, we’re hugely proud of the results.

Latest case study now live incase you missed it.

With a keen eye for design, Nicole knew the look she wanted and approached a local kitchen company. They came up with a range of designs but although there was nothing wrong with them, the couple felt that they would like an alternative design. They were already dealing with a lot of different companies for other rooms in the house and were reluctant to involve another but Anthony suggested they visited Rowan at Kitchen Design Centre Urmston to see if he could improve the design, and they were absolutely blown away with what he came up with.
