A Retro Revival: A Stunning Kitchen Transformation in the Ribble Valley

When Melanie and Nick embarked on a major renovation, converting their garage and extending their home in Clitheroe, in the Ribble Valley, they began their search for the perfect kitchen by consulting four different kitchen companies.

But everything changed after a friend highly recommended Kitchen Design Centre in Blackburn — one visit with designer Lou Roberts was all it took.

From their very first meeting, Lou’s passion, professionalism, and ability to listen stood out. It quickly became clear that Kitchen Design Centre was the right choice for them.

Initially torn between modern and traditional aesthetics, Melanie and Nick were relieved to find that Lou offered a wide array of ideas, bridging both styles. The extensive showroom displays in the Blackburn showroom further helped bring these concepts to life. Ultimately, they were drawn to a contemporary design in a bold blue colour. Guided by Lou’s creative vision, they introduced a striking contrast with vibrant mustard accents—adding energy and character to the space.

The design brief centred around capturing a distinct 1970s flair. To enrich this retro aesthetic, Melanie curated an impressive collection of Hornsea pottery, now proudly displayed throughout the kitchen. These iconic pieces not only enhance the nostalgic charm but also bring depth and personality to the kitchen.

The cabinetry is a striking mix of Porto Ocean and Porto Taupe, beautifully grounded with Ontario Oak accents. These rich tones are complemented by a sleek Attico worktop. Practicality and performance are elevated with a Blanco sink and a Quooker Flex Tap Pro 3, both chosen for their quality and modern functionality.

When it came to appliances, Lou recommended Neff—a choice they remain thrilled with, especially their innovative hob. A live Neff cooking demonstration at the showroom proved invaluable, giving them insight into the the appliance’s full potential and practical use.

A crucial element of the project’s success was Lou’s close collaboration with their builder. She attended on-site meetings and played an integral role in important design decisions, such as the optimal positioning of the windows—ensuring the layout was as functional as it was beautiful.

The end result is a show-stopping kitchen that strikes the perfect balance between sociability and practicality. It hasn’t just modernised their home—it has transformed the way they live.

What Our Designer Says

"This was a fabulous project to work on, as I was involved right from the start with the architects' plans and went on to project manage the entire kitchen build, liaising closely with the builder throughout. It was great that Melanie and Nick were brave and willing to try a bold, bright blue. The end result is a striking, practical kitchen that has transformed their home."
